In the Christian church calendar, the time leading up to Christmas is called Advent, a Latin word meaning “coming.” We mark the four Sundays in Advent as a way to prepare hearts for the coming of Jesus. Children can begin to understand the meaning and beauty of Advent with simple activities, stories and songs.
We began the preparation for Advent at school with 3 prayer services in our hall where we introduced the junior infants to our beautiful crib.
We lit the first candle on the wreath which is the candle that represents hope. Every week we will mark the lighting of a new candle with a prayer service discussing the meaning of advent.
